About Us

THANK YOU SOUTHWEST PORTLAND

Thank you to our neighbors in Portland’s Collins View and South Burlingame for selecting Burlingame Bikes their favorite bike shop on Next Door.

WHO WE ARE

(Scroll down for OUR TRIP TO EDDY MERCKX HEADQUARTERS in Belgium, WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING (Customer Reviews), and DIRECTIONS (at the bottom of the page).]

Marc and Glenn Vanselow, son and father, partnered to open Burlingame Bikes in 2013. We love bicycles, old and new. As professional mechanics, we love the technology of new bikes and cherish the hand-built craftsmanship of classic bikes.

Carrying on the hand-built tradition, we pride ourselves on our attention to detail, which brings you precision repairs with quality components, including Campagnolo, Selle Italia, Vittoria, and Morgan Blue. When you bring your bike to our shop, the owner is the mechanic who will be working on your bike.

We want everyone to be comfortable in our shop. Our goal is to meet your needs, whether you are here for advice, service, parts, or to buy a bike.

Marc, son, partner, and professional mechanic, has a certificate in Automotive Repair Technology from Portland Community College. He also is a certified bike mechanic. He began his career in 2001, maintaining and repairing Italian sports cars at an Alfa Romeo shop in Portland. When the shop relocated out of town, Marc turned to bicycles. He has been a bike mechanic in Portland since 2005. Marc rides classic steel bikes, a mid-90s Eddy Merckx Corsa Extra and a 2004 De Rosa Neo Primato, both equipped with Campy Record. He also enjoys his 1962 Western Flyer cruiser and 1972 Raleigh LTB-SC single speed.

Glenn, father, partner, and certified bike mechanic, is an avid cyclist and a lover of classic steel bicycles. Glenn rides a 1998 Colnago Technos 2000 Competition Art Decor with Campy Record and Campy Shamal Ultra wheels, and one of just 50 Sancineto steel bikes imported into the US from Italy in 1994. He also was enjoying a new carbon Eddy Merckx with Campy Record until a customer came in, said, “I want your bike”, and bought it.

OUR TRIP TO EDDY MERCKX HEADQUARTERS IN BELGIUM

The 2019 Tour de France began with two stages in Belgium to honor the 50th Anniversary of Eddy Merckx’s first of five Tour victories. The AG2R La Mondiale team rides Eddy Merckx bikes, including the new StockEU  on the Pro Tour.

It’s always exciting to see a brand new model bike for the first time. Here is Glenn unpacking a 2109 Eddy Merckx 525 in Molteni orange. We are proud to have sold the first two 2019 525s in the US.

This 525 is gorgeous! Here are a few shots from our shop. This 525 is equipped with Ultegra Di2, Selle Italia SLR saddle, Fulcrum Racing Quattro carbon wheels and Vittoria Corsa tires.

Burlingame Bikes Visits Eddy Merckx Headquarters in Belgium.
We closed the shop for a week just before Thanksgiving in 2016 to visit the Eddy Merckx headquarters. We have always been big fans of Eddy Merckx bikes. We feature several classic Merckx bikes and six different models of new Eddy Merckx bikes in our shop. We came home from Belgium even more impressed with the design, construction, quality control, and overall performance of the new bikes and the professionalism and forward thinking of the Eddy Merckx staff from the CEO on down.

Here are a few photos from the trip:

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT BURLINGAME BIKES (Customer Reviews)

Google Reviews:

Marie: 5 Stars. If I could give 10 stars, I would. I found a bike I wanted online at Burlingame Bikes and gave them a call. Glenn was super nice. He’s trustworthy and honest. He was patient with me regarding what I wanted. I appreciated the great communication and help. (Even the shipper I used commented on how great these guys are!). My bike showed up today and I couldn’t be happier. They made it happen. If you use Burlingame Bikes, you won’t be disappointed!

Al: 5 Stars.  “Father son team… the best! It’s nice to go the place where you are treated fairly and honestly!”

Alan: 5 Stars. “Great little shop. They know what they are doing!”

Keith: 5 Stars. “Cool Father & Son team that carries a nice selection of bikes and accessories while also providing quick turnaround on tune-ups. I would definitely recommend giving them a try.”

Abe: 5 Stars.  “Always friendly. Very cool selection of Old steel Italian frames and new Eddie Merckx bikes.”

Al: 5 Stars. “Father son team… the best! It’s nice to go the place where you are treated fairly and honestly!”

Hoot: 5 Stars. “I rode by and needed a minor repair…polite knowledgeable staff with great selection of accessories. People in S. Portland area are lucky to have a neighborhood bike shop of this caliber.“

Jonathan: 5 Stars. “Awesome place. Great inventory and friendly staff.”

Hasan:  5 Stars. “The owners (who are also the mechanics) of this shop are really knowledgeable and have an impressive attention to detail in their work.

“Though I have had a range of service done on my bikes by Mark over the years, most recently I had a bike boxed to be shipped across the country–and it was bullet-proof, very well-protected. They even got my floor pump in there.

“Nice vintage bike collection in the shop, too. Thumbs up.”

Molly: 5 Stars. “Overall: This conveniently located shop provides highly skilled bike maintenance with excellent customer service.

“I recently shipped my bike for my move across the country to Portland. It needed to be reassembled when I arrived so I did a search for a nearby bike store to help and am incredibly happy that I picked this one from the list.

“The store is easy to locate- just a short trip from the OHSU campus.

“It is a father-son owned shop and they make you feel like family when you walk through the door. I had a million questions about local bike routes, biking laws/ conventions in the area, and supplies that I needed for proper usage and protection of my bike. They were incredibly attentive and took the time to answer my questions thoroughly. Beyond simply answering my questions, they provided information I hadn’t even thought to ask. They even taught me hands-on how to perform certain basic maintenance tasks, rather than just explaining or providing written instructions. When I left the shop, I felt very confident in using my bike as primary form of transportation, though this is something I had never done before my move.”

Chris: 5 Stars. “The level of customer service here is amazing. Both Glenn and Marc are knowledgeable, friendly and accommodating. I am a bicycling novice (haven’t own a bike since I was 12 years old) and wanted a bike that I could commute with and do some general riding. Other shops I visited left me feeling overwhelmed and intimidated. Glenn and Marc took the time (2.5 hours one day) to explain the pros and cons of each bike and let me test ride a variety of bike types and sizes. I ended up with a Nova Race and could not be happier. Burlingame Bikes is the type of business that you’ll feel good supporting. Thanks guys.”

Erik: 5 Stars. “This is a great neighborhood bike shop with a real appreciation of Italian style. Marc and Glenn are friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable. This shop does top level mechanic work on my commuter as well as my race bikes.  Highly recommended.”

Scott Fe:  5 Stars. “Marc and Glenn run a clean, well-organized / merchandised business. I have been extremely satisfied with the service work they have performed on my steel frame road bike. The repairs have been done right, on time and as estimated. They have also found and pointed out things I need to watch for on my bike. Good people, good store and great service. I highly recommend this shop.  Most helpful.”

Scott Fl: 5 Stars. “Excellent shop, knowledgeable owners. Cool selection of bikes. Great source for parts and service. Highly recommend this father / son owned business.”

“Update: Trued the wheel that was jacked up after a downhill race. RESPECT. Nice job Marc.”

Richard: 4 Stars. “Interesting place. A fair amount of old bikes and a great collection of Campy stuff.”

Yelp Reviews:

Sarah: 5 Stars. “What a great place! This hardworking father/son duo are the best! They made my old funky make like new again. I can’t wait to get it out on the road. They even polished up my handle bars! Wow! Will definitely be going back to them for any future work.”

Niki: 5 Stars. “Super nice and helpful. Prices are fair and they don’t charge for certain things that are super easy to fix. You don’t find that kind of genuine help a lot of the time. Really couldn’t get any better. Def. Recommend!”

Dino: 5 Stars. “This is the best bike repair shop in town. My car broke down & I needed my bike right away. They fixed it within a couple of hours. Making me safe to hit the road. They told me my options from the least to the most expensive repairs, did a great job. Great customer service, talented mechanics, and right across the street from Market of choice. He even fixed my light for free. Thank you. You are my new go to bike shop.”

Matt F:  5 Stars. “Glenn and Marc provide incredible service at great prices.  The shop carries a variety of products and makes me dream of adding top of the line components to my bike.  I brought my bike in for a couple small adjustments and they took care of it right away!  I was out the door in no time.  The shop is beautiful and full of classic bikes.  Good to talk with them about bikes, local routes, and some cycling travel destinations.  I will definitely return soon.”

Pete:  5 Stars. “I’m an everyday bike commuter and this is where I go for tune-ups and gear. Mark is super helpful, does great work, and charges a really fair price. He also has a nice variety of bikes. I thought he featured primarily higher-end road bikes but when I was in the other day I noticed he had options for all kinds of riders. I love having a really great place to go right in my neighborhood.”

Marissa: 5 Stars. “Stopped in yesterday for some bike gear. The staff here was super helpful and friendly even though I was only looking at locks and such. The team here was happy to go through my options for the simple accessories as well as run through the pros and con of each option. They even showed me options they could order if I was looking for something different. No pressure sales. Totally appreciated by a biking novice like me! Will definitely be back when I’m looking for the next toy to spruce up my bike.”

Scott: 5 Stars.  “I have been a customer of Burlingame Bikes since it opened. I can’t say enough good things about Marc and Glenn. Nice showroom, broad selection and well displayed. Their repair work is great. Accurate estimates, ready when promised and the work is done right. I trust them with both my commuter and my road bike.
Give them a try. You will be glad that you did.”

Facebook Reviews:

Robin: 5 Stars. Glenn provided excellent service to our daughter, an out-of-state college student who needed to ship her bike home for the summer. Our daughter did some research on shipping, and Glenn packed the bike and got the bike shipped for us. We would have been really stressed if this hadn’t worked out, and Glenn made it work. Not only that, but he is a pleasure to work with. Shout out to Burlingame Bikes!”

Rick: 5 Stars. “Great service while selecting a new bike.”

Robert: 5 Stars. “Cool shop with classic Italian steel and modern carbon.”

Tony: 5 Stars. “Thanks for the quick tune and great service! I’ll be back commuting to work tomorrow with confidence in gears, air in tires and new gadget to track speed and miles.”

Oregonian, June 14, 2013, Page 1, Business Section

“They don’t want to change the world; only offer neighborhood bike retail and repair shop – with a European flourish and in the “spirit of fun” – in the Burlingame section of Southwest Portland.

(They) have a curated, European flair reflecting the Vanselows’ personal taste. Many of the accessories are from Europe, from tires and bars to saddles. There’s also roughly a dozen “classic” bikes from Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands in the showroom, bikes initially purchased by the Vanselows for their personal collection, including an Eddy Merckx professional racing bike and a 1982 Colnago Super Profil.
